Description
Neurofeedback therapy (EEG biofeedback) is a non-invasive, brain-based intervention that aligns naturally with the goals of counselors and therapists seeking effective, complementary tools for their clients. Grounded in neuroplasticity, neurofeedback helps the brain learn to self-regulate by reinforcing healthier patterns of neural activity over time.
During a typical session, sensors placed on the scalp measure real-time brainwave activity. Clients receive immediate visual or auditory feedback that reflects whether their brain activity is within a desired range. This process—similar to operant conditioning—allows the brain to gradually shift toward more regulated and efficient functioning, without medication or invasive procedures.
Clinically, neurofeedback has shown to be a great adjunctive intervention for ADHD, anxiety, depression, PTSD, emotional dysregulation, and sleep disturbances—concerns frequently encountered in counseling settings. Our clinic sees an 85% success rate in improving symptoms for our patients. By targeting specific brainwave patterns, neurofeedback can support improved attention, reduced impulsivity, enhanced emotional regulation, and increased resilience to stress. For example, training sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) activity may support focus and behavioral regulation, while alpha and theta modulation can facilitate relaxation, trauma recovery, and improved sleep.
Neurofeedback is highly individualized, always guided by brain mapping data, and delivered over a series of sessions that promote lasting neural change. Counselor, doctors and other professionals in the medical and mental health field frequently appreciate how it complements other therapies by addressing the physiological underpinnings of emotional and behavioral symptoms—particularly for clients who feel “stuck,” overwhelmed, or less responsive to traditional interventions alone.
This presentation is designed to help counselors and therapists understand when neurofeedback is appropriate, how it integrates with psychotherapy, and how it can expand referral options to better serve complex clients. Attendees will gain practical insight into how brain-based training can support therapeutic outcomes and client well-being.
Participants
This training is for psychologists, social workers, counselors, school counselors, psychiatrists, family therapists, and other mental health professionals who work with children and families. In order to ensure quality education, each training will be capped at 20 participants, with a minimum of 10 participants.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to:
- Describe the key features of neurofeedback and how it works.
- Identify diagnoses that neurofeedback can improve and why.
- Assess and identify individuals who may benefit from neurofeedback.
About the Presenter
Carl Weeks earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology at Utah State University, then went on to get his Master’s Degree from Utah State University in Counseling. He worked for the state of Idaho as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for 10+ years. Now a certified neurotherapist, Carl is passionate about helping people improve their quality of life and get back to what they love. As a husband and father of three children, all through adoption, he understands the importance of good mental health. With his wife being healed through neurofeedback, he has
first hand perspective of what it can do for improved quality of life.
Important Note
Each participant will receive an attendance certificate approximately 48 hours after the event.
Idaho Licensing Regulations State:
- Counselors and MFT’s: Rule 100.07
- Social Workers: Rule 100.05, “CE hours may be obtained for by preparing, providing, or attending trainings that are germane to their profession.”
- Neither licensing board pre-approves course for approval. Generally, as long as the course/training is “Germane” to the profession, it will count.
