Matt Mayock, M.S.

I graduated with my Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Touro University Worldwide in 2023. I also have a Ph.D. in Philosophy from SUNY Stony Brook (2009) and taught Philosophy and World Religions before deciding to become a therapist. After many years of teaching I realized that my best memories are of giving personal support to others who were going through difficulties or big changes in their lives.

I see individuals of all ages as well as couples and families, for a range of issues including anxiety, depression, trauma, self-esteem, relational distress and parenting challenges including defiance and ADHD. Depending on clients’ presenting problems, I use a variety of approaches including Internal Family Systems, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Attachment-based interventions, Bowen Family Therapy, Gottman Therapy, Child-Centered Play Therapy, and Child-Parent Relationship Therapy. My approach is systemic, which means that ‘problems’ are not simply located in one person but involve their network of relationships (which includes their relationship with themselves). That’s why the client-therapist relationship can be so powerful, as it can begin to shift our templates and working models for relationships throughout our lives. Current research shows that regardless of the therapy modality being used, the single biggest predictor of successful therapy is the quality of the client-therapist relationship. So we start here, building from the unique profile of experiences, strengths and needs that each client brings.
