Art therapy is a way of connection and expression through the process of artmaking.  It can facilitate and support individual as well as relational concerns, with people of any age.  Components of artmaking, such as sensory and kinesthetic, allow the client to identify and work through body and brain regulation.  Affective and perceptual components allow for the increased awareness of and regulation of emotions and insight.  Cognitive and symbolic components encourage alternative ways of thinking, understanding, and expressing.  Artmaking fosters creativity and problem-solving, which play a huge role in self-esteem, mastery, resilience, reduced conflict, and transformation.  Artmaking has a unique power to touch on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of life.  It provides new forms of communication other than words alone.  When facilitated by a trained art therapist, art can enable positive therapeutic work.  Artistic ability is not required.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT ART THERAPY: Many mental health professionals use artmaking in their work with individuals and kids; however, only those with extensive and specialized training can call themselves Registered Art Therapists.  Currently, there is only one trained Art Therapist in the Magic Valley (Twin Falls and surrounding areas): Carrie Bridges is an art therapist with an entry-level license (ATR-P).  She is supervised by Board-Certified Registered Art Therapist (ATR-BC) Dr. Cynthia Wilson (Boise) as she moves towards full licensure.
